English Grey Partridge hackle is one of the most iconic and traditional natural materials used in fly tying, especially for tying soft-hackle wet flies and North Country spiders.

Sourced primarily from the neck, back, and flanks of the grey partridge (also known as the Hungarian partridge), these feathers are prized for their beautifully mottled patterns in soft greys and browns. Their distinctive speckled barring gives a natural and lifelike appearance that perfectly imitates the legs, wings, or movement of emerging insects.

What we offer:

  • grey hackle feathers washed and dyed in yellow
  • each bag contains aprox 1gram of feathers
  • perfect for tying hackle for spidersand wet flies
  •  used for tails, legs for nymphs and emergers

What sets this material apart is its softness and mobility. When tied into a fly—especially in wet flies or soft hackles—the fine, flexible fibers come alive in the water, pulsating with even the slightest current. This natural movement is incredibly effective in mimicking the behavior of insects, making grey partridge hackle ideal for subtle, imitative patterns that fool even the most cautious trout.

The most famous uses of English Grey Partridge hackle can be found in classic North Country spider patterns, such as the legendary Partridge & Orange, Partridge & Green, and other simple yet deadly wet flies. These flies typically feature a slim silk body and a single soft turn of partridge feather as a hackle, creating an elegant, sparse, and incredibly effective profile.

Fly tyers often select different parts of the bird for different fly sizes—shorter neck feathers for small hooks, or longer flank feathers for larger patterns and nymph collars. Because of its versatility, natural look, and unmatched movement, English Grey Partridge remains a cornerstone material in traditional and modern fly tying alike.
