Flat Lead Wire is a highly versatile and essential material in fly tying, especially for patterns where weight is important to get the fly to sink or reach the desired depth quickly. It is commonly used by fly tyers to add weight to flies without altering the fly's natural appearance or action too much.

  • approx 19-20 pcs of 14 cm length each!
  • soft and easy to work with
  • perfect for making slim nymphs too and micro nymphs

Advantages of Using Flat Lead Wire

  1. Slim Profile: The flat shape of the lead allows you to add weight without making the fly too bulky or distorting its shape.
  2. Precise Weighting: Flat lead wire provides more control over the amount of weight you’re adding, which is helpful when you need to get the fly to sink at a specific rate or depth.
  3. Easier to Work With: The pliability of flat lead wire makes it easy to manipulate, cut, and wrap around the hook.
  4. Better Control Over Distribution: With flat wire, you can add weight exactly where it is needed, such as in the middle or at the head of the fly, and leave other areas lighter.
  5. Versatility: Flat lead wire can be used in a wide variety of flies, including nymphs, streamers, wet flies, caddis pupa imitations, and more.

Flat lead wire is an indispensable material for fly tying when you need to control the weight of your flies. Its versatility, precise control, and slim profile make it ideal for adding weight to a variety of fly patterns, particularly nymphs, wet flies, and streamers. It’s a highly effective material for creating lifelike movement and achieving the desired sinking depth for your flies, ensuring they perform at their best in the water.

How to Use Flat Lead Wire in Fly Tying

  1. Preparation:
    • Start by cutting the flat lead wire into small pieces or strips based on the size of the fly you are tying. Flat lead wire comes in various thicknesses and can be cut easily with scissors or wire cutters.
  2. Wrapping:
    • Wrap the flat lead wire around the hook shank where you need the weight. Be sure to wrap it evenly to avoid creating any lumps or bumps on the fly. The wire should lie flat against the shank, but you can adjust the amount of wire to control how much weight you add.
  3. Securing the Wire:
    • Once the wire is wrapped in the desired position, use a few tight thread wraps to secure it in place. Ensure that the wire is firmly anchored and won’t shift during fishing. You can use a figure-eight wrap or just wrap the thread around the wire and hook shank a few times.
  4. Covering the Wire:
    • After securing the wire, cover it with thread or dubbing to finish the fly. The wire is often covered by thread, dubbing, or tinsel to keep it hidden and maintain the fly’s appearance. Make sure to create a smooth body profile with the materials used.
