Coq de Leon Pardo Rinon Feathers (Grade Extra) are premium Spanish rooster feathers, carefully selected and packed by Trout Line for fine fly tying work. Each pack contains 6 high quality Riñón feathers, chosen for their colour, shine, elasticity and clean fibre structure.

Rinon feathers come from the kidney area of the rooster and are considered among the best Coq de Leon feathers from a quality point of view. They are not as long as neck or saddle feathers, but their fibres are fine, straight, elastic and very regular in length. This makes them excellent for tying elegant tails, wings and Spanish-style hackles.

The Pardo family is famous for its natural speckled pattern, brightness and translucent look. The markings should be visible on both sides of the feather, giving the fibres a very realistic insect-like appearance. These natural speckles are one of the main reasons why Coq de Leon Pardo feathers are so appreciated for trout and grayling flies.

These feathers are ideal for modern perdigons, delicate nymphs, dry flies, emergers, wet flies and traditional Spanish patterns. A few fibres are enough to create a clean, natural and durable tail without adding bulk to the fly.

Key features:

  • Extra Grade Coq de Leon Pardo Riñón feathers
  • carefully selected and packed by Trout Line
  • 6 feathers per pack
  • feathers from the Riñón / kidney area

  • small and medium trout flies
  • traditional and modern European fly patterns

Why choose these feathers:

  • selected for quality, not just packed in bulk
  • Riñón feathers are among the most beautiful Coq de Leon feathers
  • excellent natural mottling for realistic flies
  • strong fibres that keep their shape well
  • perfect for clean and elegant fly tying
  • useful for both classic wet flies and modern nymph patterns

Educational note:

Coq de Leon, also known as Gallo de León, is one of the most iconic feather materials in European fly tying. These feathers come from traditional Spanish rooster lines from the León region, where two main families are especially appreciated by fly tyers: Indio and Pardo.

Pardo feathers are known for their natural mottled colours, brightness and translucent fibres. The Riñón feathers are especially valued because they come from a very specific area of the bird and offer a rare combination of beauty, regularity and fibre quality.

In traditional Spanish fly tying, these feathers were used not only for tails, but also for wings and hackles. Today, they remain essential for tying perdigons, nymphs, dry flies and elegant wet flies where natural detail, durability and a clean silhouette are important.

I purchased 4 packets of these feathers for use in tailing nymphs that I sell, and have found them to be ideal for any such application. The feathers are high quality, with stiff and well marked fibers. (Posted on 9/6/2017)
